It also led to participation in the development of the US Pentagon’s first top secret, experimental, “Cold War” Long Range Reconnaissance Patrols (LRRP’s) in Southern Germany, whose initial mission was intelligence gathering (combat espionage - behind enemy lines surveillance – *Author’s note), engaging in “shock operations”, and tactical placement of Special Atomic Demolition Munitions (SADM’s, or “Tactical-Nukes”) at strategic Eastern European border locations in the event of a feared Russian land invasion. These were the Armys equivalent to the perhaps more distinguished and renowned Navy's SEAL Teams. A serious parachute malfunction, and the injuries resulting from a near fatal plunge from an aircraft at an altitude of twelve hundred feet (400 meters) cut short my military career and launched me on another adventure across Europe and into the Middle East as a journalist during the 1967 Arab/Israeli, “Six-Day War”.

Before that, most of the world suffered under a feudal system in which the people were truly slaves of their governments in all things. There was no strong buffer between them and their despotic rulers, no assurance of freedom to pursue commerce and to live decently, to keep the fruits of their labor and hold the paying of tribute at a minimum. The middle class made the dream of liberty a possibility, set limits on the government, fought for its constitutions, removed much of governmental privilege and tyranny, demanded that rulers obey the just laws as closely as the people, and enforced a general civic morality.

My wake-up call: Watch for another 9/11-WMD experience

This is a wake-up call that we are about to experience another 9/11-WMD experience.

The wake-up call is unlikely to be effective, because the American attitude toward government changed fundamentally 70-odd years ago. Prior to the 1930s, Americans were suspicious of government, but with the arrival of the Great Depression, Tojo, and Hitler, President Franklin D. Roosevelt convinced Americans that government existed to protect them from rapacious private interests and foreign threats. Today, Americans are more likely to give the benefit of the doubt to government than they are to family members, friends, and those who would warn them about the government's protection.

Plan Iraq - Permanent Occupation

Congress is back from its July 4 break and with it more bluster and political posturing on changing course to keep things the same, including everything not working in place.
